What an excellent experience and meal! I had a good friend in from out of town and she arrived starving for some Southern grub when she arrived at my house. I had been meaning to visit Bernadine's for quite awhile so this was the perfect opportunity! We arrived right as they opened for dinner service so we were waited in very courteously and promptly. Apparently Monday and Tuesday are all day happy hour so we enjoyed some delicious house wines and the ranch dusted chiccarones for a great price. The chiccarones were great, especially with the hot sauce provided. My friend ordered the fried catfish that came with coleslaw and greens - and wow. I tried a bite and we agreed it was the best catfish and greens we'd ever had. The breading on the fish was almost like tempura where it was light and crispy and not heavy at all. The greens were amazing and tasted like butter and bacon goodness. I ordered the snapper which came with sweet potato "noodles". Both were yummy although I could have used more seasoning on the fish. I think my next visit will have me ordering the catfish... I could see that parking could be rough between the two restaurants on property but we were early bird diners today and didn't have that problem. Service was refreshing - prompt and personable from friendly people. Overall I am looking forward to coming back again very soon.

On Tuesday Evening, 12/13, I had a 5 star experience at Bernadine's with an old friend and his wife. I was not expecting food at this level as the reviews for Bernadine's are good but not exceptional. However, obviously I was there at the right time and ordered the right items. Dinner began with a cocktail at the bar. I chose Bernie's G & T. I love gin and tonics and this may have been one of the best ever experienced. It had a tad of compressed watermelon which made it beyond delicious. In fact - it was so good I had several more throughout dinner. We then split a dozen chargrilled oysters for $36. Sounds a tad high for oysters in Houston; however, what came from the kitchen was amazing. And, when I eat amazing oysters the price is irrelevant. Only mistake is we should have ordered 2 dozen! Then we decided to split the I-10 platter and make that dinner. It was probably the best seafood appetizer platter I have ever had. I strongly recommend this to anyone whom loves amazing seafood. Tons of food and well worth the $65 price. The smoked fish spread, fried oysters and chicharron were amazing. It will provide enough food for 3 as a dinner entrée . For dessert we split a flawless oeufs a la neige. Clearly everyone whom comes to Bernadine's musty have this dessert - clearly. Our waiter was awesome and the ambiance relaxing. I will visit this venue on all future trips to Houston. In fact, I may travel to Houston just to dine here again. Yeah, that good!

I didn't have high expectations for this place as the reviews are mixed, some loving it and some not so much, and my feelings are that of falling closer to just OK. We came for my birthday dinner as I was really excited to try this place out as I love seafood and I must say the seafood selections were good, but everything else was a bit lackluster. The oysters from the raw bar were ok, fresh but a bit gritty. Gulf Fish Ceviche-The fish was very tender and overall the combination of Texas Peach with Mayhaw Leche de Tigre and the grilled pineapples flavors were interesting but I felt like there needed some acid. However, I liked the heat from the pickled Fresno chili's and liked the use of the thinly sliced green tomatoes to almost make a taco/roll. (3.5/5) Crawfish Monkey Bread, oh man our server really hyped this up for us but sadly as many have said, a few bites in and I was done. I really liked the crawfish flavor mixed with the cheese, but my issue was the bread. It looked like it would be super fluffy and soft on the inside but sadly it was so dry, and I love bread. (1/5) Pan Seared Gulf Snapper was quite delicious, I liked the playfulness of the sweet potato cacio e pepe as the pasta, the crunch from the toasted almonds and the creaminess from the lemon herb ricotta. The Snapper itself was well prepared, not overcooked and the skin was crispy! (4.5/5) Cochon de Lait Au Presse was more of a Gulf coast inspired dish, dirty faro, sautéed swiss chard and creole mustard vinaigrette which was a bit on the mushy side especially with the brick of cochon meat, but the crackling added a nice crunch! It wasn't the prettiest to look at but an overall tasty dish if you like pickled/mustardy stuff. (4/5) Pie and Ice cream- the blackberry hand pie, with side of lemon poppyseed ice cream sitting on a bed of marshmallow fluff just didn't cut it for me. The dough of the hand pie tasted stale, the sugar unnecessary and just overpriced for a higher end toaster strudel. (2/5) Overall, the Mains were fairly well executed and tasty, but everything else kinda missed the mark. The service was also hit or miss, our designated server provided the bare minimum, checking on us some but nothing much. He didn't even give me my birthday dessert, which we indicated while making our reservation =(. However, I was lucky enough to find another server who rose to the occasion and quickly surprised me with the birthday dessert with the lit candle, ending our evening on a higher note, bumping this from 3.5 to 4 stars!

Flew to Houston for two days for business. My brokers took me to this restaurant. It is in a strange part of town that is partly rundown and seedy but apparently is being revitalized (I'm not from the area so I have no idea). It has a valet onsite which is nice. The wait staff is dressed in pastel polos with jeans and a black half apron. All together in a room the look is pretty cool with the mix of pastels milling around the room. The atmosphere is a little hipster and modern/contemporary. There is a varied selection of oysters which run from not very briny to very briny. I'm not a slimy congealed goo fan so I didn't partake but my table mates said they were delicious (the chargrilled ones). I had the roasted beet salad app that had colorful beets, diced watermelon, okra, and radishes. It was soooo delicious and refreshing!!! My main dish was the pork dish that is pork cooked four ways, brick pressed into a square, and then pan seared. It was very tender and delicious. It was topped with Swiss chard in a vinaigrette and a chicharron. The chicharron was sooooo crisp and light - delicious! For dessert we shared cheesecake with sour cherries and the churro with chamomile ice cream. While both were good, the churro was AMAZING!!! 4 stars because they got our drink order wrong twice. Otherwise terrific!

This is a super cute restaurant located in the heights next to hunky dory. I came on a Thursday for an early dinner and I loved how open and bright the restaurant was. For appetizers we ordered the crawfish monkey bread, crab claws, grilled oysters, and raw oysters. The crawfish monkey bread is absolutely delicious and a must order. The cajun sauce was creamy and perfectly seasoned and the bread was so soft and buttery. Grilled oysters were a little pricey for just being garlic, butter, and bread crumbs but perfectly cooked to where they were still nice and plump. Crab claws were really fresh it just had too much olive oil and needed more acidity in my opinion. As an entree I had the oyster mushroom fettuccine with the added fried oysters. The oyster mushrooms were a little too salty but the fettuccine apparently is house made and it was delicious! The texture was light and went well with the sauce. I liked this dish a lot more than my friend's catfish. I also tried the Bloody Mary which came with a large shrimp and was pretty good. I had a great experience here and loved the overall ambiance. I'll definitely be coming back!

OMG. WHAT a meal. And I'm not just saying that because I got engaged after eating here! :) Where to start? Gorgeous interior (which wasn't surprising given the look and experience at their next door sister restaurant Hunky Dory - go there too) - high ceilings, well lit, just a well designed, modern restaurant look. According to the restaurant's website: "Bernadine's is a love letter to the Gulf Coast," and you can taste that love for the Gulf when you eat their food. We started with the ceviche of the day - gulf snapper, with mango, red jalapeno, and amazingly thin slices of green tomato. The ceviche was fresh, bright, and light. We DEVOURED IT. My carnivorous fiance had the lamb roulade with white bean hummus, covey rise field peas, and mint julep glaze, which he really loved....until he admitted he did love mine more. I had the pan seared gulf snapper with sweet potato Cacio e Pepe, lemon herb ricotta, and toasted almonds. I'm salivating just thinking about it again. The snapper was PERFECTLY cooked. PERFECTLY. So well seared and yet so moist and flaky in the center. The sweet potato "Cacio e Pepe" was delicious - thin spirals of sweet potato as the "spaghetti of Cacio e Pepe" that were buttery and delicious. I can't say enough about this dish. I LOVE salt. This dish hit the salt mark on the head. Hmmmm...salty like the sea. Loved it. When can I have it again? Then dessert. Full disclosure: I am not a big fan of desserts. I'm more of a cheese plate than a sweets/desserts kind of girl, but almost all of the desserts at Bernadine's tempted me. Rice beignets with strawberry lambic jam and buttercream? Torched meringue with orange Creme Anglaise and candied kumquat? We ultimately (after many rounds of back and forth) decided on the Pie & Ice Cream, which is a charming, rustic strawberry hand pie with marshmallow fluff and lemon poppyseed ice cream. Delicious. We had a few drinks (of course). I very much enjoyed the Pendennis Club Cocktail (gin, apricot, lime, and Peychaud's), and my fiance liked his Horse's Neck (bourbon, ginger syrup, Topo Chico). They also have some great beers on draft or bottled (including many Gulf beers) - my boyfriend had one (can't remember which), and I had a glass of the Pedernales Cellars Viognier (made in Texas). We had a reservation. I ABSOLUTELY recommend having a reservation. We showed up ten minutes early for our 8:30 reservation on a WEDNESDAY and still had to wait for our table to be made ready. We ordered our first drink at the bar, and they brought them to us at the table when they were ready. (Interesting quirk - I don't think they have a liquor license, so you have to join a "club," and give them your ID and they add you to the list and then you can order your drink! Service was great, even on a very busy night! All in all, we had an amazing night. Perfect spot for our pre-engagement meal! Loved it. Five stars, no hesitation. I know some people have some qualms about Treadsack. I don't. I've eaten at Downhouse, Hunky Dory, and Bernadine's and had exceptional food and service every time. I cannot wait to go back!

If I weren't living on a teacher's salary I'd be eating here a couple times a month. I supposed I just need to start hitting up tinder more frequently and suggest we head on over to Bernadine's. Smiles lit up my face as we pulled in. The outside alone gives you a warm, gitty, feel of "this place is going to be good"!!!! From what I understand the owners are Louisiana born and bred, but don't quote me on that. We started off with an assortment of a dozen oysters. The waitress recommended the sparkling rosé would be nice with the oysters, but my drink never came. She claimed she didn't know what happened to the drink ticket so she comped our first two drinks which was the right thing to do. The place wasn't packed yet, so I don't get it....but whatever, things happen. They are fairly new. In between oysters and our meal we became friends with our dinner neighbors seated next to us. They insisted we try their ranch dusted pork chicharrones which was their appetizer. Very good and large portion but super salty. Try it and see what you think. I ordered the Dr. Pepper glazed duck and my friend ordered the Grilled gulf fish. The duck alone would have me coming back monthly if I could. Best food I've had since I can remember. My taste buds were happy campers and I didn't want it to end. Wow! Now time to hit up tinder to see who will be taking me back asap! I tease, I tease!
